Temporary/contract officers earning RM3,000 or less eligible for Socso contributions

Kuala Lumpur: Civil servants employed on temporary or contract basis who are earning RM3,000 or less per month are eligible to contribute to the Social Security Organisation (Socso) beginning June 1, said Socso chief executive Datuk K. Selvarajah.
He said workers earning a monthly salary of more than RM3,000 and were not eligible to contribute under the Workers’ Social Security Act, could still contribute towards the fund on condition that their employers and the workers themselves agreed to be covered under the Socso scheme by submitting their option notice.
Workers who had previously contributed and were now earning a salary of more than RM3,000 must continue to contribute in line with the principle that ‘once you are eligible, you continue to qualify for contribution’,” he said.

“Socso will ensure that all workers and employers understand the matter by organising briefings nationwide beginning today,” he told Bernama after opening the Socso Social Security Protection Briefings to Civil Servants on Temporary and Contract Basis at the Putra World Trade Centre, here yesterday.

Selvarajah said civil servants would enjoy the same benefits as those workers in the private sector based on the two protection schemes provided by Socso.

“The first scheme is the Employment Injury Scheme which provides protection to workers involved in accidents with benefits such as for medical expenses, temporary and permanent disability, education benefits, dependents and funeral arrangements.

“The second scheme is the Invalidity Scheme which covers invalidity pension, education benefits and survivor’s pension,” he said.
