KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Immigration Department had issued 63,277 Malaysian International Passports (MIP) in the state capital last year as compared to previous years.
Its director, Datuk Mohammad Mentek, said the number of MIP applications had increased drastically in January, May and November 2012 as compared to previous years, and believed it was because of the school holidays and festive celebrations being celebrated in the country.

“Kota Kinabalu recorded the most MIP issued last year with 63,277 applications as compared to other districts such as Sandakan, Tawau, Keningau and Lahad Datu.

“As of February 27 this year, Kota Kinabalu is still leading with about 11,436 applications followed by Tawau, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Keningau,” he said at the department’s monthly gathering yesterday.

Meanwhile, Mohammad said he was confident that various types of passports could be issued after each application was updated through computerized filing system.

“We have actually started the computerized filing system beginning February 18 this year whereby applicants do not have to fill forms manually.

“All they have to do is just come to the Immigration counters and present their identification cards and passport photos and everything will be done within a day,” he said, adding the new system was implemented in Peninsular Malaysia and was only introduced in the state on Feb 18.
