Minimum wage: K'gau bosses told to write in

Published on: Sunday, December 16, 2012
Keningau: Shop owners and businessmen in the district who cannot afford to pay the minimum wage of RM800 are advised to write in to the Government.
Rural Development Assistant Minister Datuk Sairin Karno, who is also Liawan Assemblyman, said this in response to several complaints from business operators that they could not afford to pay the minimum wage during the launching of the Industrial Agriculture Carnival here.
In his speech, he hoped the industry would enhance the agriculture production for the international market and eventually boost economic growth as well as make Sabah a developed state by 2020.
He, therefore, hoped the people realise the benefit given by the Barisan Nasional Government in providing assistance to the people to develop their economy, adding that the opposition cannot make improvements with just promises.

Masidi: 10 mistakes leaders must avoid

16th October, 2012
KOTA KINABALU: There are 10 common mistakes which leaders must not make, said Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun.
In his keynote speech at the Leaders Conference organised by Yayasan Sabah Group here, yesterday he said the first mistake commonly made by leaders is avoiding personal responsibility.
“Leaders need to realise they are responsible to themselves and to others. They should also realise that they need to lead themselves before leading others,” he said.
According to Masidi, another common mistake made by leaders was not building a leadership team as leaders normally formed followers instead of leadership team.
In this respect, he said, the leaders should teach the team complimentary skills that would teach the followers not to compete with them but to complete them.
“If you teach them this way, your employees will not absolutely depend on you. Additionally, leaders also have to teach the group to be committed to the same cause,” he said.
Masidi also said possessing limiting attitude also could be one of the mistakes of leaders who usually refused to accept ideas, suggestions and feedbacks from the employees.
“This kind of leaders will not favour changes and they show negative thinking towards the employees’ proposals unless the ideas come from themselves,” he added.
Masidi added that leaders should treat the employees fairly and reward them according to their contributions to the organisation.
“The general rule is that 80 per cent of employees can generate 20 per cent of revenue to the company. However, 20 per cent efficient workers can always generate 80 per cent profit to the business.

Govt to assist 32,000 find jobs in Sabah

3rd October, 2012
KOTA KINABALU: The state government assures that it will help 32,000 job-seekers in Sabah through the 1Malaysia Training Scheme (SL1M).
SL1M will implement various programmes with the participation of the private sector as part of the latter’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) to overcome unemployment.
Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman said the state government welcomed efforts that help to reduce unemployment among graduates in Sabah.
“I believe the private sector through their CSR can help to train candidates with potential to become quality workers based on the current job market demands,” he told reporters after launching a state-level SL1M outreach programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, here, which had 44 selected companies participating.
He advised graduates not to be choosy when seeking employment and not to be discouraged when they fail to secure jobs.
The SL1M outreach programme, launched on June 1 last year, attracted 8,000 participants, with 400 of them in Sabah, securing employment.
Based on last year’s record, a total of 8,000 graduates in the country obtained jobs after taking part in SL1M.
Meanwhile, BERNAMA reported that a large portion of the 3.3 million jobs expected to be created by 2020 will be filled by 70 per cent of students in the vocational stream.

Avoid politics at work, civil servants told

Published on: Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin urged civil servants to perform their duties professionally, devoid of the influence of any politically sympathy to the struggle of political parties.
"I raise this matter as with the elections drawing close there are public complaints regarding the attitude of some civil servants who try to venture into politics.
"There is no doubt that every one of you as a public servant have your own political stance. This position is certainly in favour of or being sympathetic to the struggle of certain political parties.
"However in the course of duty, I feel professionalism should be practiced without taking in account one's personal political standpoint," he said.
He said this in his speech while officiating at the Excellent Service Awards (APC) and presentation of MS ISO 9001: 2008 certificate in 2012 the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry Sabah at Wisma Pertanian Sabah on Monday.
He said that professionalism is important in determining the state machinery runs smoothly and orderly.
Professionalism in their service means being transparent and or not be one sided in favouring any party and to carry out their entrusted duties successfully.
