Masidi: Be ready for any criticism

RANAU: Political leaders need to be ready for any criticism from the people in order to improve their weaknesses, said Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun.

Masidi, who is also the Ranau Umno division chief and Karanaan Assemblyman, said the constructive criticism is crucial to enable them to improve any shortcomings.

“Leaders must constantly chide and be reprimanded if there are faults and weaknesses because human beings are all the same; what distinguishes them is the function or office.

“A leader is not a prophet but only a normal human being with weaknesses but has been appointed to serve the people and their needs.

“Therefore, when reprimanded, don’t take it to heart or get angry but accept it with an open mind and always think positive,” he said.

He was speaking at a lunch with about 200 Ranau Umno community leaders at the Lohan Rest House here recently.

In this regard, he said when dealing with the various grouses from the community, both political and grassroot leaders should be open to criticisms.

Masidi said politicians should also pursue their careers in accordance with their religious teachings so that whatever they do stays in the right path.

“I also call upon all leaders in Ranau to serve the people well and with a sincere heart and always strive to get close to the people.

“For those who do not hold positions in the party, I hope they too can work together to serve the people as I believe many people in Ranau have become successful and this is the right time for us to come together to help those in need,” he said.

Masidi also thanked former leaders in Ranau including Tan Sri Kasitah Gadam, Tan Sri Ghani Gilong and former Kundasang assemblyman Datuk Mynoor Ginggor who have done a lot to serve the people.

Sabah’s local food key tourist attraction

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Masidi Manjun said the local food industry has continued to attract tourists, especially from China.

The Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said during the first seven months of this year alone, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Sabah had equalled the total number of visitors from China in 2011.

“This “phenomenon” clearly shows the importance of the local food industry to tourism,” he said when opening the “Fabulous Food 1Malaysia at Lido Square near here yesterday.

And according to Masidi, tourists, especially from China often asked the local tour operators about Lido Square as it has become famous for its diverse local delicacies.

Masidi: 10 mistakes leaders must avoid

KOTA KINABALU: There are 10 common mistakes which leaders must not make, said Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun.
In his keynote speech at the Leaders Conference organised by Yayasan Sabah Group here, yesterday he said the first mistake commonly made by leaders is avoiding personal responsibility.
“Leaders need to realise they are responsible to themselves and to others. They should also realise that they need to lead themselves before leading others,” he said.
According to Masidi, another common mistake made by leaders was not building a leadership team as leaders normally formed followers instead of leadership team.
In this respect, he said, the leaders should teach the team complimentary skills that would teach the followers not to compete with them but to complete them.
“If you teach them this way, your employees will not absolutely depend on you. Additionally, leaders also have to teach the group to be committed to the same cause,” he said.
Masidi also said possessing limiting attitude also could be one of the mistakes of leaders who usually refused to accept ideas, suggestions and feedbacks from the employees.
“This kind of leaders will not favour changes and they show negative thinking towards the employees’ proposals unless the ideas come from themselves,” he added.
Masidi added that leaders should treat the employees fairly and reward them according to their contributions to the organisation.
“The general rule is that 80 per cent of employees can generate 20 per cent of revenue to the company. However, 20 per cent efficient workers can always generate 80 per cent profit to the business.

Have curbs on mobile phone use in schools, says Masidi

Kota Kinabalu: Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said there should be restrictions to the usage of mobile phones among students in schools.
He said this after handing over goodies to orphans from an orphange in Ranau known as Rumah Putera Harapan at the Square, Novotel 1Borneo, here.
"Parents send their children to school to study, not play games on their mobile phones. It's as simple as that." He added that if they are allowed, then there should be restrictions in terms of when they can use it such as during recess or after school.
"If the usage of mobile phones is allowed freely, there will be possibilities of abuse and will give impact to their concentration."
This includes the usage of Facebook and ring tones in the middle of class.
On the issue of AirAsia moving to Terminal One, Masidi commented that Malaysia Airport Berhad (MAB) and AirAsia should come to a mutual understanding and agreement that moving there is for the growing need of passengers.
"The Federal government has invested large sums of money for Terminal One, so it should be fully utilised."

Tourist arrivals in Sabah have increased, says Masidi

KOTA KINABALU: Tourist arrivals in Sabah for the first five months this year went up 3.7 per cent in comparison to the same period last year

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Masidi Manjun, said during the same period this year, a total of 1,134,149 visitors came to Sabah, generating an estimated revenue of RM2.02 billion. Last year 1,093,578 arrived between January and May.
The most significant increase was tourists from China, including Hong Kong and Macau, that numbered at 71,152 or 41.4 per cent more than last year.
Masidi disclosed this when replying to Likas assemblyman, Datuk Liew Teck Chan at the assembly yesterday.
The minister said based on expenditure per capita of tourists in Sabah, those from China averaged at RM2,768.40.
“For the first five months this year, revenue from Chinese tourists is estimated to be RM197 million. Last year it was RM139.3 million, indicating an increase of 45.6 per cent,” he said.
Meanwhile, on a query from Kuamut assemblyman, Masiung Banah, on a new building for SMK Entilibon, Masidi said the Ministry of Education had issued a tender for the construction last March.
“At the moment, the process of evaluating the tender is ongoing to pick a qualified contractor. The contractor’s appointment letter will be issued as soon as the evaluation is completed,” he explained.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah can become a regional tourism centre in the East Asean Growth Area (EAGA).

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjunsaid Sabah was in the right position to be a centre for tourism in the EAGA region.

The group comprises Indonesia’s Kalimantan, Brunei, southern Philippines, and Sabah and Sarawak.

He said there was a wide variety of attractive destinations and products which could draw tourists into the region.

“I am sure with the good working relationship with other players in the grouping, Sabah can become the regional centre in developing the tourism industry, he said after opening the Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) meeting here.

Having more direct international flights into Sabah would definitely help boost the state’s tourism prospects in the region, said Masidi.

“The BIMP-EAGA area can become a major tourism destination,” he added.

Earlier in his speech, Masidi said EAGA should move forward as one voice to become an active, successful and relevant sub-regional centre.

Astro gives RTM RM500m for better Sabah coverage

Kota Kinabalu: Pay TV station Astro allocated RM500 million to Radio-Television Malaysia (RTM) as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to enable the government-owned broadcaster to widen its coverage especially in Sabah and Sarawak, said Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.He said Astro and RTM signed a memorandum of understanding for the purpsoe for a period of three years beginning this year."My Ministry thanks Astro for the gesture. This will put an end to non-receipt of Astro and RTM broadcasts and other sources of broadcast disturbances," he said, after attending the opening of the Ministry's new integrated complex in Jalan Lintas, Kepayan, here.The complex was opened by Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin. Rais said under the MOU, Astro would also be supplying 1,800 decoder units to eligible recipients in Sabah and 2,000 in Sarawak in the near future.He said his Ministry through RTM would also be increasing programmes with content suited to the taste of target audiences in Sabah and Sarawak and a few selected areas in the peninsula.Rais said in connection with this, local television content producers were invited to submit suitable programmes to complement 16 suppliers of such programmes in Sabah and Sarawak.He said besides television programmes broadcast on RTM's TV1, TV2 and TV interaktif (TVi) networks, the collaboration would also allow people in Sabah and Sarawak obtain satellite broadcasts of RTM's radio stations, namely Klasik Nasional and its English, Mandarin and Tamil stations.On the complex sited on a 6.76-hectare site and costing RM80 million, Rais said it had the latest radio and television transmission facilities and was a new landmark here in line with RTM's growth over the years.

Tourism Sector Contribution to State's Economy

As up to September 2011 the tourism sector  has so far contributed RM 3.662 billion to the state's economy. A total 2,096,202 tourists (617,260 Foreign tourist and 1,478,942 local tourist) arrived since January this year.
