KOTA KINABALU: A group of dynamic artists here calling themselves Cracko Art Group organised a ‘verbal art’ night, in what could be the first of its kind here in Sabah.

Led by one of its members, Harold Egn Eswar, the theme of the Saturday night’s event was ‘Voices From the Asylum’, providing a platform for people from just about any background to express their art verbally.

“Kota Kinabalu has evolved so much in recent years and yet, while the younger generation yearns for a platform where verbal art of any sort could be shared among them, elements of art like this is really lacking,” said Harold.
He added that such a platform can also serve to promote traditional ways of story-telling, as in the past where the older generation used to pass down tales of life verbally.

Having said that, Harold hopes that more people, especially those who are fluent in native languages such as Murut, Dusun, Rungus, Bajau, etc, to come forward and take part in the next session of the group’s verbal art nights.
The event was also held to help fund the group’s newly-established mini gallery and studio, called CAG Aslylum located in Kolombong.

Some 50 people turned up at the CAG Asylum in Kolombong on Saturday night, including six who performed various verbal art expressions, namely Hazli Bjli, Sabrina Aripen, Chris Pereira, Chris Wright, Harjinder Kler and Lily Priggs.

Rakyat Sabah Tidak Perlu Takut

Chinese hail State Govt help

Kota Kinabalu: United Sabah Chinese Community Association (USCCA) President John Lim said the Chinese community here received a lot of contributions from the State Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.
"Our Chief Minister is an open-minded leader and this is proven with the big annual allocation for the Chinese schools, temples, churches as well as non-governmental organisations.
"Apart from that, the State Government has also been giving annual contributions of lion heads to us and associations.
Besides providing funding, the State Government also gave assistance such as allocating land to build temples and cemeteries," he said.
In his welcoming speech at the Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Dance Festival in conjunction with the 2013 Chinese New Year at the Padang Merdeka, Saturday, Lim said under the leadership of Musa who is also State Finance Minister, Sabah had been acknowledged by the Audit and Malaysia Assessment Services as among the states with the best financial management.
In this respect, the USCCA, which comprises 15 associations from around the State Capital and with about 20,000 members is the biggest association here, thanked Musa and the State Government for the contributions.
On another note, Lim said USCCA had been organising the Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Festival as well as other events such as the Dragon Boat race, Moon Cake Festival and many others for quite a number of years.
Since all these events required a big amount of funds, he hoped the Chief Minister would consider listing the USCCA as one of the recipients of the annual grant from the State Government in order to lessen its burden.
For the Festival, he said the participating troupes came not only from the surrounding area of the city but also from the interior.
In reply, Musa assured that the State Government would consider the USCCA's request for funding to make up for some of the cost of bringing teams to Kota Kinabalu for this Festival.
He said age-old cultural festivities like the dragon, unicorn and lion dance are not only popular among locals, but have become an attraction for tourists keen to learn and experience Malaysia's diversity.
"We must not allow modernity and progress to turn us away from appreciating and further strengthening our respective cultures.
"There is a lot of wisdom in culture, and we can tap into the many lessons that culture offers us including unity, sustainable ways of life, protection of natural resources and preservation of ethnic languages," he said.
The Chief Minister said the Chinese New Year celebration that is just round the corner is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about one another, and to celebrate diversity, instead of viewing it as an obstacle.
"Sabah is a showcase of 1Malaysia, and it is my hope that the harmony and understanding we have today will continue to prevail.
"We are blessed to live in a peaceful nation, and one that allows everyone to earn a living regardless of background or location.
Improvements are constantly made for the benefit of the people, and we continue to listen to feedback in order to address issues.
Let us remain united as we move into the future," he said.
In this respect, Musa said Sabah and the people were grateful to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for his sensitivity towards the State's needs by continuously providing priority to its development as reflected by the big funding in the National Budget each year.
About 20,000 people thronged Padang Merdeka to see the opening of the festival participated by 86 Dragon, Unicorn and Lion dance troupes.
Musa also beat the drum together with Chinese political, business and community leaders at the centre stage.

International festival right platform to promote Sabah-CM

TAWAU: The International Cultural Festival here is the right platform to showcase Sabah’s unique unity, peace and harmony enjoyed by its multi-racial and religious people.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman said apart from assisting to promote tourism such festival was also the best platform to continue preserving culture, particularly among the younger generation.

“I am very proud to see the spirit and commitment as well as involvement of the people from all walks of life what more many youths are participating to make this event a success,” he said at the opening of the third edition of the festival in the Municipal Council compound in Fajar here yesterday.

About 50,000 people attended the festival featuring cultural performances from Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and Syria as well as 25 sub-ethnic groups.

Musa said this was a positive sign for the nation’s future especially in the context of further galvanising unity, togetherness and harmony of the people from all backgrounds, religions and ethnicity in line with the 1Malaysia spirit.

According to him, the situation was what makes Sabah beautiful.

“This is the joy for us living in Sabah … we live in peace and harmony, we can sit down together and celebrate all the celebrations,” he said

Musa said it was also the aspiration of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to see the people of Malaysia live in peace and harmony under the 1Malaysia concept.

Sabah was also proud since Najib had said that the State was among the states that can be the role model of the 1Malaysia concept.

“That is why we always called on the people in Tawau, Sabah and the whole country to ensure we continue to live in peace,” he said.

Musa also cautioned the people against falling into the trap of the opposition who only aimed at creating chaos such as through street demonstration, among others.

“We don’t want this unhealthy culture and what we want is to continue living in peace and enjoying good economic development,” he said, adding that the people in Sabah must be thankful for the sensitivity of the Prime Minister.

As for the State Government, Musa said it was taking various approaches including providing for a huge State Budget in order for the people to continue social and economic development that comes with peace and harmony.

“I am also amaze with the commitment of the organiser to invite international participation not only from this region but other countries from the Asia continents and Middle East,” he said.

Towards this end, he said the State Government welcomed the organiser’s efforts and initiative to take various kind of approaches in order to make the festival more attractive.

Three years ago, he said leaders from the district, namely Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan and Datuk Abdul Ghapur Salleh had discussed with him on creating something good for the people here to celebrate together just like in other districts such as the Kalimaran Festival, among others.

“So the Tawau International Cultural Festival was born,” he said, adding the festival had enabled the people to see various cultures of not only the various sub-ethnic groups in the state but also from other countries.

“What is important is that we continue to preserve our strong unity and I hope the festival will continue to be the catalyst of the district’s economic development,” he said

Meanwhile, Tawau Municipal Council President Datuk Haji Ismail Mayakob expressed gratitude to the State Government under Musa for the unwavering support to the festival.

He said it reflected that the State Government prioritise the local economic development through promotion of tourism, which is among the objectives of the festival.

“The essence of the festival is community driven, participation from each sub-ethnic group,” he said, adding this year’s concept was a bit different from previously where it features folk song, dancing and playing of traditional music instruments.

Among those on hand were Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor, Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Nasir Tun Sakaran, Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, Assistant Infrastructure
Development Minister Datuk Pang Yuk Ming, Kalabakan MP Datuk Seri Panglima Abdul Ghapur Salleh, assemblymen, Sabah Cultural Board Chairman Datuk Wences Angang and foreign consuls.

First halfway home for prisoners

KOTA KINABALU: Realising the effectiveness of halfway houses for prisoners upon their release, the first of such ‘home’ in Sabah was declared open yesterday.

Located at Lorong Bunga Patuma in Kepayan near here, the Sabah Prisons Department Halfway House provides shelter and food to newly released convicts who are rejected by their families, or those who have no one to turn to.

Initiated to help lower the crime rate, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop also explained that the halfway house also served as a treatment facility to help convicts overcome the social stigma through counseling services.

Apart from providing them accommodation and other facilities, the halfway house gives the newly released prisoners a safe environment to adjust to the local community.

“From a psychological viewpoint, former convicts often felt marginalised and the safe houses prevented them from returning to the arms of the old bad company,” he said.

Abu Seman added that before identifying a halfway house, prison officers had to conduct an inspection on the place and brief the community of the programme to avoid untoward incidents.

“So far there has been no opposition from the local community on the location of halfway houses,” he said.

He also said the programme of relocating prisoners to halfway houses upon their release has been found to be effective when only 10 per cent of its participants returned to their ‘bad habits’.

“Ninety per cent of the participants led a good life, succeeded in securing jobs and posed no problems to their employers. Therefore the objective of stopping their criminal habit is achieved and our monitoring shows all of them are clean,” he told reporters after launching the halfway house here, yesterday.

Also present were Prisons Department’s director-general Datuk Seri Zulkifli Omar, Sabah Prisons Department director SAC Suria Idris, and Putatan assemblyman Datuk Marcus Mojigoh.

He added that by mid this year, Sabah Prisons Department would be working closely with Paradise Army Camp in Kota Belud to enable ex-convicts to secure general worker jobs there. Another five of such collaborations will be set up by their counterparts at army camps in Peninsular Malaysia.

Since the programme was implemented in May 2010, a total of 14 halfway houses have been set up.

“Our mission is to have at least one in every state,” he said.

As of Jan 21 this year, a total of 541 participants have benefited from the halfway houses.

Only one convict is currently staying at the halfway house here, as three of his former ‘housemates’ have been released after securing employment.

The house could take up a maximum of 15 people at any one time.

Meanwhile, Zulkifli said the Prisons Department continues to explore into various rehabilitation programmes to provide a second chance in life for the ex-convicts.

“Former prisoners will always have to deal with situation after their release. Some are rejected by family members and can not secure employment due to social stigma. These will only demoralise the convicts.

“Therefore, community support and trust are vital to give them a second chance in life and prove that they have changed for good,” he said.

He added that today, there is more to prisons than just an institution to teach prisoners a lesson due to their past mistakes.
“We no longer look at prisons as just a place for the prisoners to serve their sentence; it is a correctional institution where inmates are also provided with counseling,” he said.

Huminodun.

Sabah doing great!

Sabah is doing great! Day by day, we are getting older and older. The more older we are the more experience we had. But different situation for Sabah. The more it being ruled by the recent government, the more development its experienced. Well we don't have to go far in finding development in Sabah. We can see that everywhere is now being developed. But there are some area are yet to be covered by them but at least we can see the development time by time. This is something that we need to realize, not only taking about the bad things about the government. We are born here so we must respect and give full support to them. It is not make sense to say that the government is not taking care of his people. All this while the government doing well and getting relevant for the future of the Sabahans. Thanks to the government and hope the effort to develop Sabah will never stop.

Artist in sabah can go far

Artist in Sabah can go far. Music is important for some people like an artist. We could never understand why does they love music so much. Well, some people believe that music can bring peace and relaxing. Recently Datuk Musa met some of the sabahans musician. He do appreciate those who involve in this indusry. I actually kind of like his effort , who is close to any types of people. He is not only concentrate on politic and economic but also in social things. This is what we called as " young in heart" He will never stop supporting the music industry. The industry will never be left behind and it will goes well together with the development. We already have our own artist and frankly speaking, all of them can go far. So, we the people, should give more attention to our local artists. We should be proud for having them and be thankful for having Datuk Musa as our CM.

Education vital to improve M'sians' oral health: CM

Kota Kinabalu: Education is vital to improve the oral health status of Malaysians, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman Saturday.

He said oral care and healthcare services must be further extended to suit a growing population.
"Even though the ratio of the profession to population is down to six for every 6,810 patients, we need to find ways to improve the status," he said when opening the Third Borneo Dental Congress, here.

His speech was read by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai.

Musa said continuously educating the public such as on good brushing techniques would help keep dental diseases away, including, the common fear of visiting the dentist.

He said for dentists, knowledge transfer is equally important to strengthen the dental healthcare services.
He said today, knowledge attainment could be received through scientific courses, meetings and conventions such as the Dental Congress.

Musa said there should be no excuse for practitioners not to keep abreast with the latest in the industry.
"With the presence of speakers from overseas, I am sure that delegates will gather more knowledge and learn from experiences of dental experts from beyond our shores," he said.

He hoped with the convention dentistry will continue to grow in providing the best oral healthcare.

KOTA KINABALU: A total of RM11, 261,065 in aid was distributed to single mothers throughout the state last year said Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun.
She said the assistance was channeled through the Sabah Department of Social Services to help ease their financial burden.
“However, we do not want single mothers to rely on government aid alone. We want them to make an effort to improve their standard of living.
“That is why the government has implemented various measures to help improve their livelihood and these include programmes on self-motivation, skill training courses as well as grants for those who are starting up a business,” she said.
Azizah was speaking when opening the Consumer Program: Budget 2013 and the Implementation of Minimum Wage at Wisma Wanita, here, yesterday.
Also present were the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Datuk Asnimar Sukardi, Sabah Women’s Advisory Council chairperson, Datuk Hajah Mariati Robert and director of the Sabah Women’s Affairs Department, Datuk Siti Sapoo Ahok.
Azizah said the Sabah Women’s Affairs Department, Department of Social Welfare Services and the Sabah State Library also operated programmes such as Azam Kerja and Azam Niaga.
A total of 522 participants have taken part in Azam Niaga through the Sabah Women’s Affairs Department with 318 of them already declassified from the hardcore poor category.
“The participants now have their own source of income and do not have to rely on government assistance alone.
“This shows the commitment of the ministry to make sure that women in this state fully benefit from the initiatives introduced by the government,” she said.
Azizah said last year, the Sabah Women’s Affairs Department spent 97.60 per cent or RM585,624 of the RM600,000 allocated for the development of women in the state.
The federal government also allocated RM1.2 billion to the Permata Programme to provide pre-school education.
There are 13 Permata Centres in Sabah that are either operating, completed or under construction.
Three are already operating in Tuaran, Beaufort and Kota Belud. Two have been completed in Papar and Matunggong. Eight are under construction in Ranau, Penampang, Kudat, Kimanis, Kota Kinabalu, Putatan, Sandakan and Batu Sapi.
Families living in the rural areas with a household income of RM1,500 or less a month and urban families with a montly household income of RM2,500 and below can send their children to the Permata Centres for free.
