LABUAN: A major fire broke out on board a tanker while it was loading methanol.
A Malaysian crew member was killed, one injured while four others were missing.
The deceased has been identified as Sharil Azmi Baharudin, 28, from
Melaka and his body has been sent to the hospital here for a
post-mortem.
The vessel, MT Bunga Alpinia which is owned by MISC
Berhad, caught fire at about 2.30am yesterday when it was loading
methanol at the jetty of the Petronas Chemicals Methanol Sdn Bhd
terminal near Pulau Enoe in the Rancha-Rancha Industrial Zone.
The fire also caused three explosions on board the 25,079-tonne and
180-metre long tanker and one of them could be heard some 10 kilometres
away.
A major operation involving the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement
Agency (MMEA), police, Marine Department, Royal Malaysian Air Force and
Health Department has been mounted to search for the missing persons.
The Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) operation chief Lt.
Commander Nor Azmi Daham said the four missing crew members – three
Malaysians and one Filipino – were said to have jumped into the sea to
save themselves during the fire while 26 others were rescued.
