Families of heroes receive RM100,000

Kota Kinabalu: The State Government on Thursday presented RM100,000 to the family members of slain Sgt-Maj. Baharin Hamit at their home in Taman Inanam Laut here.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman presented the RM80,000 cheque and RM20,000 cash to Baharin's widow, Sumiati Suarah, 50, and their two children, Muhd Izzat Syafiq Baharin, 16, and Nur Izzaty Syafiqah Baharin, 11.

"Actions speak louder than words," said Musa, when approached by the media for comments after he presented the aid to the bereaved family.

Musa recently announced a donation of RM100,000 to each of the families affected as part of showing appreciation and acknowledging their sacrifices for the country.

"Their sacrifices for the country is very meaningful and it cannot be repaid with any amount of money," he said.

Also present were State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman, Resource Development and Information Technology Assistant Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad, Universiti Institut Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah Rector Datuk Dr. Abdul Kadir Rosline, State Police Contingent Administration Department Head SAC Noor Azam Jamaludin and City Police Chief ACP Jauteh Dikun among others.

Meanwhile, Abdul Kadir said UiTM would provide tuition classes to all the children of the fallen heroes to ensure they do well in their studies.

"We give space and opportunity to these children by providing tuition classes which will be monitored by UiTM and we hope this would also be a platform for them to further their studies with UiTM," he said.

Sumiati expressed deepest gratitude to the State Government and Chief Minister for the donation. Her two children were also calm, particularly Nur Izzaty who had fainted and constantly broke down when met during the first few days of her father's death.

Sumiati also thanked UiTM for their offer to assist her children in their studies through tuition classes.

Meanwhile, Jainab who also donated an undisclosed amount to the family said she would discuss with the Kg Darau Menggatal village head on how they could assist Sumiati and her children, who have expressed their wish to move closer to their family in Kg Darau in Menggatal.

Meanwhile, the widows of two policemen similarly killed while pursuing the Filipino terrorists, received RM100,000 each from the State Government at their respective homes in Bandar Sri Indah in Tawau and Taman Pelangi in Semporna.

The widow of Cpl Salam Togiran, age 42, Marlinah Utan,38, and four of her children aged between one and 16, as well as widow of Sergeant Abd Azis Sarikon,52, Sitti Banddorah Mahalil, 39, together with her children aged between 18 and seven.

The donation was presented by State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman who was accompanied by senior civil officers and senior police officers.

The donation was presented by the State Government to lessen the burden of families whose loved ones were killed while protecting the country.

Sukarti who met with the widows gave them words of support and comfort.

Also present during the donation presentation, was District Police Chief ACP Awang Besar Dullah who also presented donations collected from the Tawau Police Station to Marlinah.

Rakyat menjadi keutamaan dalam konsep 1Malaysia

Walaubagaimana pun keadaan di Lahad Datu terutamanya di Kg Tanduo sudah terjejas. Smua keluarga telah dipindahkan ke dewan bagi mengelak berlakunya insiden yang tidak diingini semasa pasukan keselamatan kita menjalankan Operasi Daulat. Terjejasnya aktiviti harian mereka membawa kepada masalah-masalah seperti sumber pendapatan. 

Sedar dengan keadaan yang tidak memberansangkan buat mereka yang terjejas, kerajaan persekutuan akan  menimbangkan kemungkinan memberi bantuan wang ehsan kepada penduduk yang terjejas. Perdana Menteri Kita Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak melaporkan bahawa isu ini sudah dibincangkan dengan Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Selaras dengan slogan 1Malaysia "Rakyat didahulukan, Pencapaian diutamakan" Datuk Seri Najib sememangnya berjiwa rakyat.

Datuk Musa - Upko Chinese New Year Open House

Chief Minister: 80% of Government allocation for Sabah utilised

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Government spent RM3.499bil or 80.14% of the RM4.366bil allocated last year for various development projects in the state.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said Sabah was given the allocation under the 10th Malaysian Plan for implementing 785 projects.

He said the success achieved by Sabah exceeded the national average of 73.66%.

“Therefore, I urge all state and federal government officers to collectively ensure the projects are implemented according to schedule,” he said after chairing the State Action Council meeting at Wisma Innoprise near here yesterday.

”Apart from that, we should also know if they meet the target and satisfy the people’s needs. What is good should be continued and any weakness should be rectified as soon as possible.”

Musa said government agencies should also be more active in implementing the outcome evaluation of programmes or projects to determine if they met the desired objectives.

“This is important to ensure implementation of the programmes or projects benefited the target group,” he added.

On another matter, he warned contractors involved in the implementation of development projects to complete them according to schedule.

“We see that many problems are caused by the contractors themselves,” he said. “Those with delayed projects may be blacklisted.”

Musa said that of the 785 projects, only 58 were problematic due to several factors, including problems related to the site and utilities transfer.

Students get RM100 aid

Kota Kinabalu: Students began to collect their one-off RM100 cash aid from respective schools, Tuesday.

The Early School Special Assistance was made available from 10.30am to SMK Bandaraya students, who came along with their guardians and parents, as the school dedicated the day, especially for the distribution.

"We have 2,600 students eligible for the cash aid and preparations started about a week ago," said Principal, Dr Shirley Tay Siew Hong.

All received the cash, without any deductions. She said due to the amount of cash involved in the distribution - about RM260,000 in total - the school needed to beef up its security.

"We requested for police escorts from the Alam Mesra and the Karamunsing stations, thankfully they responded," said Tay.

She hoped the students would make good use of the aid given to them, such as to buy equipment useful for their studies.

Form Three student Sharif Sharul Nizam from Penampang said he has no plans for the money yet, but may use the money to buy a reference book.

His classmate, Leronisa Liaw, meanwhile said she may use some of the money to pay for her class monitor skirt, which would cost her about RM21.

"The remainder will be used for study reference book and pocket money," she said.

Her best friend, Shelviana Chrisna Manggung also said she would spend RM41 to buy herself the class monitor uniform, while keeping the rest to buy two reference books worth RM15.

State Resource Development and Information Technology Assistant Minister, Datuk Jainab Ahmad, who was present at the distribution, advised students to make good use of the cash aid.

"I hope with this it would keep students in school, buy school equipment and subsequently excel in their education," she said.

This is the second time the Early School Special Assistance has been distributed, after it was introduced in late 2011.

During the Budget 2012 tabling, Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said some five million students from Year One to Form Five are entitled to the aid, which is estimated to cost the government RM500 million. Form 6 students, will receive RM250 book vouchers soon.

Sandakan airport gets upgrade

SANDAKAN: The Federal Government has allocated RM70 million to upgrade the Sandakan Airport, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the airport here yesterday, Kong said works were expected to be completed in 18 months.

“These will include repair and upgrading works,” he said adding that the design plans were almost done.

Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) has given its input on how to improve the conditions of the airport for the convenience of travelers, he said.

Among the sections involved include the terminal, baggage handling, mechanical and electrical and building a central utility building.

“The terminal area will increase by 3,000 sq metres with more room for departing and transiting travelers,” he said.

Kong also said that there would be more parking bays at the airport which will have centralized air-conditioning.

“We understand the importance of upgrading the airport as Sandakan is an important eco-tourism getaway,” he said adding that most visitors entered the district via air.

According to him, the government would want to see Sabah to join the country in its transformation.

Sandakan airport handled about 820,000 travelers last year, an increase of 5.8 per cent compared to the previous year.

By 2020, if the airport is not upgraded, it would not be able to handle the increasing number of passengers, he added.

Kong is accompanied by his deputy Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri and deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Liew Vui Keong, who is also Sandakan MP and MAB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad.

PPRT house is New Year gift to family in Kg Geguru, Lupak

BEAUFORT: The Hardcore Poor Housing Project (PPRT) has again enabled a family of eight in Kampung Geguru, Lupak, in Lumadan near here to celebrate the New Year in the comfort of a new home.

Kamis Burau, 59, received the key to his new house from Lumadan assemblyman, Datuk Kamarlin Ombi in a brief handing over ceremony yesterday.

He said he thanked God for allowing him and his family to own a house given by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

“Before this, my wife and I, together with our six children had to live in our old dilapidated house which had a roof that leaked when it rained.

“All of us had to sleep in the living room whenever there was a downpour. Cooking was impossible when it rained and we had to wait till the rain stopped before we could prepare our meals,” said Kamis.

“Now we will have a more comfortable life and this coming New Year will be very meaningful for us because for the first time we can celebrate the New Year in a new house. We credit all of this to the BN government which is sincerely committed in helping the people,” he added.

RM2.98 billion for Sabah

KUDAT: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday announced an allocation of RM2.98 billion to fund various development projects in Sabah next year.
The funds will be spent on, among others, improving electricity supply (RM400 million), clean water supply (RM150 million), building roads to connect rural areas (RM31.3 million), and the Kota Belud-Pitas Agropolitan project (RM66 million).
“Also among them are public housing projects in Putatan and Sandakan (RM65 million), a water treatment plant project in Semporna (RM30 million), the Tambunan Community College and Teachers Training Institute Tuaran Campus (RM32 million),” said Najib in his speech when he launched the state-level “Promises Fulfilled” Tour at the Kudat Sports Complex here yesterday.
He added that the government will enhance the development of the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal project in Sipitang, the Rice Bowl in Kota Belud, Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Kota Kinabalu and also distribute 40,000 water tanks in Sabah and Sarawak as well as implement the price standardidation programme in both states.
“Cooking gas in Banggi for instance costs RM39 per cylinder but with the price standardisation, it will be sold for RM29,” he said.
Meanwhile, for Kudat residents, the Prime Minister announced that RM3.06 million to build shophouses in Kerakit, Banggi had been approved, RM8 million to widen the road to Kepitangan Bridge, and RM3.5 million for public housing in Jalan Apa.

“The Barisan Nasional government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman give a lot of attention to the development of the education sector,” said Youth & Sports Minister Datuk Peter Pang En Yin when asked to comment on the Education Ministry’s 2012 Special Stimulus Package (PRK) for mission schools in Sabah and Labuan.

Mission school body gets recognition

PENAMPANG: The Federal government recognised the contribution made by the Federation of Councils of Christian Mission Schools Malaysia (FCCMSM) to improve the national education system.

And this was reflected in the 2013 Budget where the Prime Minister announced that RM100 million would be allocated for all mission schools, said Plantation Industries & Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok.

He also urged the Federal government to speed up the disbursement of the financial aid for these schools allocated under the 2012 Budget.

“The mission schools are fast getting recognition from the government as an organisation that can help in the education development of our country,” said Bernard, at the presentation of cash awards to SM St Michael top achievers in the 2011 SPM and PMR results yesterday.

He said the Federal government has also welcomed the mission schools offer to reform the education
system.

CM says more funds not a problem

PENAMPANG: The State government will not hesitate to allocate more money to fund cultural events like the Pesta Kaamatan for the benefit of the State.

With such a rich culture, Sabah will benefit with larger scale celebration that will attract more visitors and the people to join in, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman said.

Speaking at the closing of the state-level Pesta Kaamatan celebrations at KDCA hall here yesterday, he said the State coffers were strong to allow the government to allocate more funds for public events.

“If there is a need to have more funds, we will do so. With our strong unity, our financial position and financial management are rock solid,” he said.

KL aware of Sabah's need for more funding

Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government is seriously looking into Sabah's need for more allocation for agriculture development and will strive to help fulfilling such needs, said Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Wira Mohd Johari Baharum."What's important is that Barisan Nasional (BN) must win in Sabah (during the forthcoming General Election). If BN wins in Sabah, surely there would be no problem," he said."Like in Kedah, my place, we lost. So if we lose, it would be difficult, because we will have a problem with the (opposition) State Government. So we hope BN would continue to rule in Sabah, so we can continue to assist the StateÉwe can help many things in the State," he told reporters after he officiated at the launching of Sabah zone-level Kor Tani by his Ministry at Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas here Monday.He said the Federal Government is well aware of the problem (Sabah's need for more Federal Government allocation) as most of the Members of Parliament from Sabah have raised it in their debates in Parliament.Citing an example, Mohd Johari pointed to the government assistance in repairing the houses of fishermen which is now being implemented in stages.Apart from that he said the Government is also now building homes for the fishermen at a cost of RM50,000 per unit. But to do this the Federal Government requires the cooperation of the State Government to provide land for the purpose.The same goes for other agriculture development, he said, adding it is for this reason that the people of Sabah must continue to give their support to the present BN State Government and its leaders.Mohd Johari also blamed the opposition's attempt to interfere in the government effort to develop Kota Belud's rice bowl by campaigning against the construction of a proposed dam that is meant to provide for the irrigation for the paddy cultivation area in the district."So that's why I said if Sabah is to be ruled by the opposition, it would make it hard for us to continue developing the State Éwe hope the people in Sabah would reject the opposition and give their full support to the existing BN State Government under the Umno leadership," he said.Some 515 people in Sabah and Labuan participated as members of Kor Tani, which aims to register 10,000 members throughout the country this year.So far nearly 6,000 people aged between 18 and 40 have joined this movement, which was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak at national-level on April 22 this year.They comprise the Pasar Tani participants, small and medium industry entrepreneurs, graduates involved in production/marketing, farmers, breeders and so on.Mohd Johari said the Ministry is now looking at probably providing an opportunity to those unemployed Kor Tani members to develop lands under the Ministry's jurisdiction that are still idle for food production.In another development, Mohd Johari said the peninsula is presently importing bananas from Sabah and Sarawak due to the banana plague that has badly affected banana cultivation there.

Govt ensures poor students not deprived of education

KOTA KINABALU: The Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera (YPPB) or Bumiputera Education Leaders Foundation has collectedRM158 million from corporate companies and individuals to help students from poor families pursue higher education. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said scholarships awarded by the foundation are based on the types of course costing between RM100,000 to RM300,000 for the entire study duration.YPPB formed in November last year has a programme called “Peneraju Tunas Potensi” or Leaders of Budding Potential that offers students with good academic results but cannot afford to pursue higher education, the financial assistance to do so.

Nor Mohamed said the government was serious in making sure that poverty did not become an obstacle for children of poor families to gain tertiary education.“Many students from poor families get good results like 5As, 6As and 7As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exams even though they have no tuition classes, internet access or proper libraries.“We believe that with more conducive surroundings and adequate financial assistance, they have the potential to achieve greater things,” he said.He was speaking at a ceremony to hand over Offer Letters of Scholarship to recipients under the “Peneraju Tunas Potensi” programme at the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu here yesterday.A total of 16 students from the rural parts of Sabah were among 225 across the country who were selected.The programme offers scholarships to SPM and STPM students as of this year.According to Nor Mohamed, some 8,000 had applied for the scholarship and finally 225 were chosen.The scholarship will allow the recipients to pursue their studies at either local or foreign institutions of higher learning.He believes the programme will encourage and inspire other bumiputera students to work harder in their studies.“Education is the stepping stone towards better socio-economic standards, poverty eradication and a better future for the nation,” he said.

RM4.4bn for Sabah under Second Rolling Plan

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has been allocated RM4.416 billion under the Second Rolling Plan (of the 10th Malaysia Plan) to carry out 724 projects.And as of May 3 this year, a sum of RM692 million or 15.6 per cent of the allocation for 2012 had been spent on development projects.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman made the disclosure after chairing the State Action Committee meeting here yesterday.Musa said he had reminded every ministry and related departments to ensure all government initiatives were made known to the people, especially projects that would benefit the target groups.“This is to prove that the government cares for the people,” he added.Musa also said members of the committee were also told yesterday that what mattered most was the people’s satisfaction towards the initiatives undertaken by the government in terms of services, wealth creation and effectiveness in resolving problems.“I also stressed on the role of civil servants in state development,” the Chief Minister said urging members of the civil service to ensure the projects listed under the Second Rolling Plan achieved their objectives.Meanwhile, Musa urged Sabahans who had gone to the peninsula to look for jobs to return to Sabah.He said there were currently some 20,000 job available in the State.“Those who have experience working in the hotel and service industry should come back as a lot of hotels and resorts are being built throughout the State,” he said.Also present at the meeting were State Cabinet Ministers.
