College status for vocational schools

PILOT PROGRAMME: Move part of govt's efforts to transform education system

NILAI: ALL vocational schools in the country will be upgraded to college status in stages by 2015 in line with the government's efforts to strengthen the national education system.
Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said 15 vocational schools in each state had been upgraded to college status under a pilot programme to transform the education system.
"The upgrading will focus on skills training.
"Students will no longer have to wear uniforms. We will also change the learning environment," he said after launching the SK Kompleks KLIA's Parent-Teacher Association Carnival and Expo, here, yesterday.
"Other than introducing a few new courses such as aviation to attract the interest of students, the vocational curriculum will be completely revamped to achieve standards that will meet the job market demands."
He said there were 78 vocational schools nationwide and a few more would be built and given the college status right away.
On the proposed muzakarah (discussion) between Umno and Pas, he said it should be expedited for the sake of Malay unity and finding a common ground for various issues. Bernama
